Introducing a brief primer on the story of Diablo 4 before its release
Just like any enduring RPG series, Diablo is filled to the brim with unique names and terms, such as Inarius, the Horadrim, and the Nephalem, among others. If you're about to embark on your first adventure in the Diablo series with Diablo 4, or if you simply need a quick recap, Blizzard has released a new video where their developers provide an overview of the story, offering some context about the series' origins and the conclusion of Diablo 3.
Diablo 4 takes place 50 years after the events of Diablo 3's Reaper of Souls DLC. During this time, Malthael, the archangel of death, caused the demise of half the population of Sanctuary, which serves as the mortal realm situated between the heavens and hells. Now, the original creators of Sanctuary, the angel Inarius and the demon Lilith, have both returned, and it seems that humanity is in for a rough ride.

Blizzard's team of senior lore managers, narrative designers, and writers delve into explaining significant events in the game's lore, such as the creation of Sanctuary and the origins of the Horadric Order, whose purpose was to safeguard Sanctuary from external threats. However, seeking more in-depth knowledge, I delved into some wiki exploration to refresh my understanding of the details, particularly regarding the complex relationship between Inarius and Lilith. It appears that their history extends beyond the simplified version of "he imprisoned her in a realm of darkness" that Blizzard briefly touches upon in the aforementioned video.
Blizzard proclaims that the narrative surrounding Lilith and Inarius in Diablo 4 is the darkest tale ever woven within the Diablo universe. Having glimpsed fragments of the initial act, I am inclined to believe this statement. The duo, serving as both Mom and Dad, have returned, but their conflicting approaches to handling their offspring persist. Although Lilith might retain some empathy for humanity, her demonic nature remains unchanged. In contrast, Inarius appears to harbor resentment towards the descendants of his children, prioritizing his ascent to the High Heavens even if it means trampling over them. Should the Horadrim stage a comeback, they will undoubtedly face significant challenges.
Diablo 4 is set to officially launch on June 6, granting early access to pre-order players starting from June 1. You still have ample time to delve into the intricate history of Inarius and Lilith if you desire more insight. Additionally, Blizzard has introduced a deeper video series called the Book of Lorath, commencing with Episode 1: Creation, offering further glimpses into the lore.
